Why Tree Roots Are Melbourne's Biggest Drain Problem

If you live in Melbourne's South East โ€” suburbs like Ringwood, Bayswater, Ferntree Gully, Lilydale or Croydon โ€” and you've had a blocked drain, there's a very good chance tree roots were involved.

These older, established suburbs have two things in common: mature native trees (gum trees, wattles, liquid ambers) with aggressive root systems, and ageing underground pipe systems โ€” mostly earthenware or early PVC โ€” that were installed decades ago when root intrusion wasn't well understood.

"In Melbourne's South East, I'd estimate tree root intrusion causes over 60% of the recurring blocked drains I attend. The trees are beautiful โ€” but they love your drain pipes."

How Tree Roots Find Their Way Into Pipes

Roots are drawn to moisture and nutrients. Your underground drain pipes are, essentially, a constant water and nutrient source โ€” and any small crack, joint gap or seal failure is an entry point. Once inside, roots don't stop. They grow rapidly inside the pipe, eventually causing partial or complete blockage.

Earthenware (clay) pipes that were common in homes built before the 1980s are particularly vulnerable. The pipe joints were sealed with mortar or rubber that deteriorates over time, opening gaps just large enough for fine root hairs to enter.

Signs You Have Tree Root Blockage

  • Recurring blockages in the same drain
  • Slow drainage throughout the house
  • Gurgling sounds from toilets or drains
  • Sewage smell in the yard
  • Green patches of grass over buried drain lines

How We Fix It

The right fix for tree root blockage depends on the severity. Our process starts with a CCTV camera inspection to see exactly how bad the intrusion is. From there:

  • Minor root intrusion: 5000 PSI hydro jetting cuts through root matter and flushes the pipe clean.
  • Moderate intrusion: Hydro jetting plus root treatment to inhibit regrowth.
  • Severe or collapsed pipe: Pipe relining or replacement may be required.

If your home has old earthenware pipes and mature trees nearby, it's not a matter of if you'll get a tree root blockage โ€” it's when. Preventative CCTV inspections every few years can catch root intrusion before it becomes an emergency.
